“How does one make sense of their own participation in the world, taking into consideration pasts that have formed legacies of colonialism and disenfranchisement? This question, considered through a philosophy of addressing and repairing harm, has led us to center Indigenous and land-based environmental stewardship and climate change mitigation in our collaboration. Drawing from our studio practices, we developed An Offering to Unsettle Settlement to ask participants to reflect on their stories, climate, and futures while grounding them in the intimacy of their immediate environments.”

CicLAvia MacArthur Park Hub
Oct 6, 2019

CicLAvia is one of the largest free open street events in the country with each event attracting upwards of 100,000 visitors. In 2019 artist Elana Mann created an interactive, playful and informative eco-art happening that brought interactive art to thousands of visitors at CicLAvia’s MacArthur Park hub. A collaboration with LACI portfolio company Nature Coatings, Dark Victory invited the public to use Nature Coatings’ innovative eco-friendly black ink to create custom postcards and a large communal banner using the bicycle itself as a mobile printing press, while sharing information about toxic manufacturing and tips on how to reduce your own carbon footprint.

Nova Jiang
Smog Orchestra

Arts District Park
Jun 21, 2019

Smog Orchestra is a performance work by Nova Jiang developed during her 2018 AIR residency. The work uses nose-shaped ocarinas (wind instruments) created using photogrammetry and 3D printing to translate the materiality of air quality into sound.

Record-breaking temperatures and wildfires in Los Angeles result in steadily worsening air quality. Smog Orchestra aims to translate abstract air pollution data into embodied experience, highlighting the complex relationship between environmental wellbeing and social equity.

Smog Orchestra launched with a score by composer Celia Hollander. The piece was performed by harpist Ko-Ni Choi, guitarist Cameron O’Connor and pianist Hui Wu in Arts District Park.
